Economic Inequality Is Negatively Affecting Children’s Health and Education – Opesh Singh Foundation
Children living in countries with higher levels of economic inequality are facing greater risks related to health, nutrition, and education. Recent findings highlight that children in unequal societies are significantly more likely to suffer from poor wellbeing and unhealthy living conditions compared to those in more balanced economies.

A recent analysis highlights that economic inequality in wealthy countries is significantly affecting children’s health, education, and overall wellbeing. The findings show that children living in highly unequal societies face greater challenges in nutrition, learning opportunities, and quality of life.
The report, “Unequal Chances – Children and Economic Inequality,” examines income disparities across 44 high-income and OECD countries. It reveals that income inequality and child poverty remain major concerns in many nations. On average, families in the highest income groups earn several times more than those in lower-income households, while a large number of children continue to live in conditions where their basic needs are not fully met.
The study further explains that inequality impacts multiple aspects of a child’s development, including health, education, and future opportunities. Children in more unequal countries are more likely to face issues such as poor nutrition, limited access to healthcare, and lower academic performance.
It also highlights that children from lower-income families consistently perform worse in reading and mathematics compared to their wealthier peers. The gap in access to quality education and supportive environments continues to widen social and economic inequality within societies.
The report recommends stronger social protection systems, improved living conditions in disadvantaged communities, equal access to quality education, and better nutrition support for children as key steps to address these challenges.
Opesh Singh Foundation is committed to raising awareness about such critical issues and supporting efforts that promote equal opportunities for every child to learn, grow, and live a healthy life.
